What is Make in India?

Make in India is the Government of India's flagship initiative, launched in September 2014, to transform the country into a global design and manufacturing hub. Its objectives are to raise manufacturing's share of GDP, generate large-scale employment, attract foreign direct investment, and build world-class domestic capability across 25+ sectors — with electronics and IT hardware among the fastest-growing.

For technology buyers, the initiative is backed by concrete policy: Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for IT hardware, telecom, and electronics manufacturing; the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order, which gives purchase preference to Class-I local suppliers in government tenders; and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), where local-content products receive procurement priority.
