AWS bills creep through a thousand small decisions. This is the FinOps sequence we run to reclaim 30–40% with no impact on availability.
Start with the boring wins
- Delete orphaned EBS volumes, old snapshots, and idle load balancers
- Right-size over-provisioned instances using utilisation data
- Move steady workloads onto Savings Plans or Reserved Instances
- Shift fault-tolerant batch jobs to Spot
Then optimise architecture
The bigger savings come from architecture: S3 lifecycle policies, Graviton migration, and serverless for bursty workloads.
FinOps isn't a cleanup. It's a monthly habit with an owner and a dashboard.
