UI and UX are mentioned in the same breath so often that the distinction blurs. They're related but distinct — and you need both to build something people love.
The simple version
UX (user experience) is how it works — the flows, structure, and logic that let someone achieve a goal easily. UI (user interface) is how it looks and feels — the visual design, layout, and interactions.
Why both matter
- Great UX with poor UI feels clunky and untrustworthy
- Great UI with poor UX is beautiful but frustrating
- Together they create products that are both usable and delightful
UX is the skeleton; UI is the skin. You need both to stand up and look good.
